Tobias Rappel, born in 1957 in Paderborn, comes from a family of working artists: His father was a wood sculptor, his mother a hand weaving expert designed and produced fabrics and textiles, his great-grandfather was a painter living in Paris and belonged to the circle of Rodin’s friends. In 1960, the family moved to Jungholz in Tyrol (Austria) where Tobias received the Austrian citizenship. From 1977 to 1982 Tobias studied painting and graphic arts at the College of Design in Linz, Austria and began his work as a freelance artist.
In addition to city and landscape Impressions the "figure in space" is at the center of his work. His concern is not about the simple reproduction of the figurative image The work evolves around both the painting process itself as well as sculptural works achieved through layering and the concentration of an intrinsic idea that embody’s the image. Tobias draws additional inspiration and ideas for his artistic work through study trips to Italy, France, Spain, Greece, Hawaii and Mexico.
Since 1987 he lives and works in Frankfurt/Main and Bingen am Rhein with his wife and agent Eleonore
